We're kicking things off with a focus on lighting control in public and urban spaces – why intelligent systems matter more than ever as cities densify, sustainability expectations rise, and communities demand safer, more adaptable places.
In this edition, we explore what truly defines a sustainable lighting solution, share insights from the transformation of Te Rimutahi at Ponsonby Civic Centre, and update you on our new Auckland office location.

Lighting Control in Public & Urban Spaces
Why Intelligent Systems Now Matter More Than Ever
Urban environments are evolving rapidly. Cities are densifying, public expectations are rising, sustainability targets are tightening, and communities increasingly value spaces that feel safe, adaptable, and welcoming.
Whether it’s a civic square, a neighbourhood park, a coastal walkway, or an immersive exhibition like the tropical ecosystems at Auckland Zoo, lighting plays a foundational role in how people experience and value public places.
Today, the conversation is no longer just about lighting. It’s about lighting control.
Sustainability and other "green" topics such as the "Circular Economy" are constantly in the news.
There has been a significant shift in attitudes with individuals and companies alike expressing a genuine desire to make a positive impact. This green revolution encompasses end clients, contractors, and manufacturers, all striving to be part of the movement.
While it is widely understood that resources are depleting, the financial advantages of adopting sustainable practices are becoming increasingly apparent from a business/financial standpoint.
In case you missed our previous announcement, our Auckland office has moved (again)...
From 2 February 2026, our new Auckland office is at 1/485A Rosebank Road, Avondale.
Our post address and contact details remain the same. After 18 years of moving every three years, we're calling it a tradition. Same team, fresh space, new energy.
Please update your records - and thanks for your continued support.
After more than two decades of community advocacy, a previously underutilised site on Auckland’s iconic Ponsonby Road has been transformed into a vibrant new civic space: Te Rimutahi.
Designed through a community-led process and funded by Auckland Council, the project brings a long-awaited public area to one of the city’s busiest and most densely populated suburbs.
Intelligent Environments was engaged by No Shock Electrical to provide the lighting control systems for the space, working alongside the project’s consulting engineers, BECA.
We love debunking common lighting control myths – one myth at a time!
Myth
We've been told the same system should be used for BMS and lighting control.
Busted
BMS systems communicate with open protocols such as BACnet and MODBUS. zencontrol communicates seamlessly with both protocols for a robust and more intuitive system.
