This month’s edition features highlights from our Illuminating Care 2025 workshop series, along with innovative projects and fresh ideas shaping the future of smarter spaces.
We begin with our one-time healthcare and aged care lighting event held in Wellington, Christchurch, and Auckland, where we connected with industry professionals to explore the latest in DALI+ lighting control.
You’ll also discover how zencontrol’s cloud-based lighting systems are transforming sports facility management, and how Green Building Technology is placing health, wellness, and sustainability at the forefront of high-performance workspaces.
From there, we step aboard the KiwiRail Northern Explorer to see how our lighting solutions elevate the new Manuhiri Scenic Plus carriage, before closing with a profile on Jason Allen, our South Island zencontrol representative and project manager.
Enjoy the read.
Sincerely, The Intelligent Environments Team
Illuminating Care – Thank You for Joining Us
Last week we wrapped up our Illuminating Care workshop series in Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland, and we’re grateful to everyone who took the time to attend. Your engagement and insights made each session a success.
We were fortunate to have Allan Organ share his expertise on DALI+ and the future of lighting control – an invaluable contribution to what we do at Intelligent Environments. We’re also proud that New Zealand ranks as the highest purchaser of zencontrol per capita worldwide, and we thank you for choosing top-quality, future-ready systems.
Watch the highlight video and take a look back at the people, places, and moments that made Illuminating Care 2025 a success.
If you missed the event and would like our team to present this in-house to your organisation, reach out to us at admin@i-e.co.nz or contact your local representative – we’ll be happy to bring Illuminating Care to your office.
For sports facilities, accountability is often a headache. Traditional methods like physical keys, password-protected systems, or SMS codes can be easily misused. Keys get lost, passwords and codes are shared with unauthorised users, and tracking usage becomes a nightmare. This leads to confusion, wasted energy, and overall inefficiency.
A zencontrol cloud-based lighting control system addresses these issues, offering a robust solution for both new installations and retrofit applications.
Read the article to learn why this system is a game-changer for sports facilities.
From adaptive lighting to air quality monitoring, the most desirable office spaces now prioritise health, wellness, and sustainability over corner offices and car parks.
Learn how green building technology is transforming work environments in New Zealand – and why wellness metrics have become a business essential.
In late 2024, Intelligent Environments partnered with zencontrol to deliver a custom lighting control solution for KiwiRail’s latest Scenic Plus carriage – Manuhiri, a luxurious addition to the renowned Northern Explorer route.
Following the success of previous Scenic Plus upgrades on the South Island’s Coastal Pacific and TranzAlpine lines, this North Island project brought the same level of innovation and sophistication to the journey between Wellington and Auckland.
With lighting playing a crucial role in passenger experience, Intelligent Environments was tasked with integrating a system that would enhance the aesthetics, functionality, and ambience of KiwiRail’s newest premium carriage.
Jason Allen, leading zencontrol representative in the South Island and project manager for Intelligent Environments, passionately advocates for zencontrol’s cutting-edge controls technology.
He generously shares his expertise with consultants and electrical contractors, ensuring optimal outcomes for customers.
Beyond work, Jason indulges in his love for cycling and contributes to para-cycling coaching at the national level. He also finds solace in exploring the picturesque Canterbury hills during occasional runs, embracing the stunning New Zealand landscape.

Lighting Control Myth Busting #9
We love debunking common lighting control myths – one myth at a time!
Myth
For lighting control, you need separate BUS cables to be installed.

For a DALI system, only simple 2-core wiring is required, which can be run with the mains cable. Simpler and less expensive than proprietary systems using BUS cables.
